How I got started with photography

Photography was never my favorite creative medium. I know, you wouldn’t guess by looking at my website. It’s photo overload! As a matter of fact, I used to want to work for the NFL. When I started college I was a Video Production major. That was what I believed was my goal and passion in life.

To my surprise, I started working as the Liberty University Field Hockey Social Media manager. It was an opportunity that came out of nowhere, and I was able to start working for them! One thing they told me was that I would have to take pictures with my camera, too. That instantly scared me. I had absolutely zero confidence in myself as a photographer and felt terrified to jump out of that comfort zone.

Lo and behold, I started taking pictures at practices and scrimmages, and I actually started to like it! I networked with other experienced photographers and began learning tips and tricks to improve my skills.

I ended up switching to Strategic Communication to focus on more of the social media aspect, as I had lost my passion to be a videographer and wanted to transition into more of the management side of social media and marketing. However, I still love a good story being told through video… one of my guilty pleasures for sure!

As I kept showing up to work, the better I got. It didn’t always have to be a shot; the art of observation is so crucial in this field. Every day was a new day to try something new or different settings. As I finished up my last few weeks of working for field hockey, it was so surreal to stand on that field and think of the girl who didn’t even believe in herself or her camera to take a picture.

If you think you can’t do it, DO IT!
